MDO Mutual Support Group Guidelines

All MDO groups incorporate The Fundamental Principles of Peer Support:
-
The gift of lived experience
-
The power of hope
-
The concept of recovery
-
The value of self-determination

MDO Formal Peer Support Groups also include a Comfort Agreement outlining expectations.
MDO Informal Peer Support Groups & Activities aim to provide opportunities for people to interact, build relationships and enjoy each other’s company by creating an environment where everyone feels physically and emotionally secure following the MDO Code of Conduct.
Key aspects of peer support groups include:

- creating a safe and private space - actively listening without judgment
- respecting individual boundaries - encouraging open sharing of experiences
- maintaining confidentiality - having a designated facilitator to guide dialogue/event
- setting clear group norms - knowing expectations for participation
…all while emphasizing empathy, understanding, and mutual support among group members.
-
Confidentiality:
All discussions within the group should remain confidential. Please use best effort to join groups from a private space. Protect sensitive information.
-
Respectful communication:
"I" statements are encouraged, along with active listening and avoiding interruptions to foster a respectful environment.
-
No pressure to share:
Participants can join groups for a sense of belonging and are not obligated to share if they are not ready. They are always able to opt out of discussions without judgment.
-
Facilitator role:
An MDO facilitator helps guide conversation, manage time, encourage active participation and ensure everyone has a chance to join in or contribute.
-
Group norms:
Basic ground rules will be followed, such as respecting others' opinions, avoiding blame or attacks, “fixing others” and focusing on support rather than giving advice.
-
Empathy and validation:
Participants will listen with empathy and validate the experiences of others, showing understanding and acknowledging their feelings.
-
Focus on shared experiences:
Participants are encouraged to share relevant experiences and insights related to discussion topics, allowing others to reflect on and learn from their stories.
-
Self-care:
Participants are reminded to prioritize their own well-being and seek additional support if needed.
